A blessed day in P.J.!
A BLESSED DAY IN P.J.!
Port Jefferson by ferry
August 24, 2025
Today is the big day we have been waiting for all week. We are going sailing on our friends' boat "Lively up". Scott is so excited.
7:45 we are at Bridgeport Ferry Terminal, waiting for the ferry to arrive.
Here it comes.
Here's the captain backing up the ship.
Scott tells me that's where we were supposed to come for the Counting Crows concert.
At 9:11 we starting to see the Port Jeff landmark.
The two towers.
Here's a higher perspective of Conscience Bay where we were on Fourth of July.
That could be us... so little.... actually we are even littler.
"Lively Up" is somewhere in there.
That's where we land when we come with the digny from Conscience Bay.
When we arrived at 9:45, John and Debra are at the terminal, waiting for us.
We're having brunch at Joey Z's, it's delicious and the service is excellent. Scott really enjoys his chicken parm with lemon pepper potaoes, me my Nova Scotia lox.
We walk back by another way which give us a tour of downtown. It is bigger that we thought. John and Debra tell us that it was run down for a while but had been revived.
On our way to the Port Jefferson Yatch Club, we stop at the boat shop where they were building a replica of a row whaling boat, used during the revolutionary war. It was used to bring messages from British occupied Long Island to the revolutionaries in Connecticut.
Imagine coming here on a row boat like this.... or hunting whales.
That's the plan they follow. They are volunteers. It was very interesting. They explain that they steam the planks in plastic to curve them.
They made a kayak with the left over planks from the replica and raft it. I cannot believe I didn't take a picture of it. It's so pretty. We see a little bit of it here. If it was mine I would call it Grand Marnier.
Next we take the lanch to "Lively Up".
And here we are.
Debra and John, our hosts.
That boom makes me nervous.
Scott is put to work.
It is so quiet, such a nice feeling.
That's the dune that we visited by dinghy with Mike and Sue. We learn that it is man made. Builders were taking sand for the construction of New York city. The plan was leveling completely some strips of land. The villagers of Port Jefferson stopped them.
And Scott gets to sail. It's a dream come true for him.
The reason why the steering wheel is so big is because you need to go to the sides to see the green and red ribbons on the sail and line them up.
We learn so much.
We get a little nervous when another sailboat is coming toward us.
With John's guidance we avoid a collision.
Leaning down is a little unsettling.
I think my husband looks good on a sailboat 😀.
We thought we were too close of the marker there but Debra and John didn't think so.
A brand new ferry.
Time to roll one of the sail and Scott does it promptly, surely and strongly.
Debra's turn to take the wheel.
John's guiding with signs.
Grabbing the mooring.
Time for the Yatch Club BBQ with s good jazzy band.
Everyone is welcoming, friendly and chatty.
What a blessed day we had.
